Privacy policy

Cleave Last updated: 21 October 2026

This policy explains what information Cleave collects, why, who it is shared with, and the choices you have. It applies to the Cleave app for iPhone and to cleaveai.app.

1. Who we are

Cleave is provided by Insetlab, LLC ("Cleave", "we", "us"), 30 N Gould St, Ste R, Sheridan, Wyoming 82801, United States. We are the controller of your personal data.

Contact: hello@cleaveai.app

2. The short version

  • Cleave is a training and nutrition app. It needs information about your body, your training and what you eat in order to work.
  • Your progress photos stay on your phone. We do not upload them, except the one front photo you choose to send to make your personal sculpture, and only with your consent.
  • Apple Health data is used only to show your activity and progress inside the app. It is not sent to AI, not used for advertising and not sold.
  • We do not sell your personal data and we do not show third-party advertising.
  • You can export your data and delete your account from inside the app.

3. Information we collect

3.1 Information you give us

Account. Your email address and password, or the identifier and email Apple or Google gives us when you sign in with them. Passwords are stored in hashed form and we cannot read them.

Profile. Your name, profile photo if you add one, date of birth, sex, height and weight.

Goals and preferences. Your goal, target weight and pace, how many days a week you train, how long a session lasts, where you train, your experience level, your diet type, foods you leave out and allergies, your units and your reminder settings.

Training. The workouts in your plan and the ones you complete: exercises, sets, repetitions, weights, durations, distances, rest, effort ratings and notes.

Nutrition. Meals you mark as eaten, food you add, water and supplements you log.

Body measurements. Weight entries and tape measurements you record.

Food photos. When you choose to photograph a meal for analysis, that photo is sent to our servers and to our AI provider to estimate what is in it. See section 5.

Coach conversations. Messages you send to the Cleave coach and the replies.

Friends and leaderboard. If you add friends, the people you connect with, nudges you send and receive, and your position on the leaderboard.

Support. What you write when you contact support, report a bug or send feedback.

3.2 Information that stays on your device

Progress photos. Photos you take or import as progress photos are stored only on your phone, in Cleave's private storage. They are not uploaded to our servers (the one exception, your sculpture, is below), they are not included in device backups, and they are not included in a data export. Deleting a progress photo in Cleave removes Cleave's copy and leaves your photo library unchanged.

Your sculpture. One exception, and only when you ask for it: to make your personal sculpture, you choose a front progress photo and agree to send it to OpenAI, which makes the image. OpenAI does not use it to train its models and may keep it for up to 30 days for safety checks before deleting it. Our servers pass the photo on without storing it, and keep only the finished sculpture, in private storage that only you can read.

Camera. The camera is used only when you choose to capture a progress photo or a meal.

Notifications. Reminders are scheduled on your phone from your plan and your settings.

3.3 Apple Health

If you turn on Apple Health, Cleave reads steps, active energy and your cardio workouts, with their distance and heart rate, to show your activity and progress. Cleave writes a workout to Apple Health only when you choose "Save to Apple Health".

Apple Health data:

  • is used only to provide health and fitness features inside Cleave,
  • is not sent to our AI provider and is not included in coach messages,
  • is not used for advertising or marketing and is never sold,
  • is not shared with third parties, except service providers acting on our instructions where that is needed to show it to you,
  • is not included in a data export.

You can turn Apple Health off in Cleave's settings at any time, and manage permissions in the Health app. Turning it off stops Cleave reading the data. It does not delete anything from Apple Health.

3.4 Purchases

Subscriptions are bought through Apple. We receive confirmation of your subscription status, the product and its renewal date. We do not receive your card number or billing address.

3.5 Technical information

When the app talks to our servers we process your IP address, device model, operating system version, app version, language and time zone, and records of requests and errors. We use this to run the service, keep it secure and fix faults.

Cleave does not include third-party analytics or advertising software.

3.6 Contacts

Cleave does not access your contacts. You invite friends by sharing a link.

Information about your body, training, diet and allergies can reveal things about your health. We process it only because you ask us to, in order to provide the app, and you can withdraw that consent at any time by deleting the information or your account.

We do not use your information for automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.

5. How AI is used

Cleave uses an AI model provided by Anthropic to write your plans, answer you as the coach and estimate the contents of meal photos.

To do that we send the provider the information needed for the request: your goals and preferences, relevant training and nutrition history, your message, or the photo of your meal. We do not send your name, email address, progress photos or Apple Health data to the coach. Your sculpture is the one feature that uses a progress photo, with its own consent (section 3.2).

The provider processes this information on our behalf under its commercial terms, does not use it to train its models, and keeps it for no more than 30 days. The coach conversation itself is kept on your phone; our servers keep a record of each request (time, size and cost) but not its text.

AI output can be wrong. Calorie and macro estimates from a photo are estimates. Check anything that matters to your health, such as allergens, yourself.

6. Who we share information with

We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with:

  • Service providers who process it for us under contract: Supabase for accounts, storage and the database, Anthropic for the features in section 5, OpenAI for making your sculpture from the photo you choose (section 3.2), RevenueCat for subscription status, and Resend for account emails.
  • Apple, for Sign in with Apple, subscriptions, Apple Health and notifications, under Apple's own privacy policy.
  • Google, for Sign in with Google, under Google's own privacy policy.
  • Other Cleave users you connect with. Friends and the leaderboard see your name, profile photo, rank and training totals. They do not see your weight, measurements, nutrition, photos or coach conversations.
  • Authorities, where the law requires it or to protect the rights and safety of users and of Cleave.
  • A successor, if the business is merged or sold. You will be told before your information is transferred and becomes subject to a different policy.

7. Where your information is processed

Our servers are in the United States (Supabase, Oregon). Our providers may process information in other countries. Where personal data leaves the EEA, the UK or Turkey, we rely on adequacy decisions or on standard contractual clauses approved for that purpose, and, where Turkish law (KVKK) applies, on your explicit consent or the mechanisms that law provides.

8. How long we keep it

  • Account and app data: for as long as your account exists.
  • After you delete your account: deleted from live systems within 30 days and from backups within 90 days.
  • Support messages: 24 months after the conversation closes.
  • Purchase records: as long as tax and accounting law requires.
  • Server logs: 90 days.
  • Your sculpture: the newest one, until you delete your account; each new one replaces the last. The photo it was made from is not kept by us; OpenAI may keep it for up to 30 days for safety checks.

Information stored only on your phone stays there until you delete it or remove the app.

9. Your choices and rights

In the app

  • Edit your profile, goals and preferences at any time.
  • Export a readable copy of your data: Settings, Privacy, Export my data.
  • Delete your account and its data: Settings, Account, Delete account.
  • Turn Apple Health, notifications and the camera on or off in Cleave or in iOS Settings.

By law. Depending on where you live, you have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its processing, receive it in a portable form, and withdraw consent. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that already took place.

  • EEA and UK: you can also complain to your data protection authority.
  • Turkey: you have the rights in Article 11 of Law No. 6698 (KVKK), and can apply to us and then to the Personal Data Protection Authority.
  • California: you have the right to know, delete and correct your personal information and not to be discriminated against for using those rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in California law.

To use any of these rights, write to hello@cleaveai.app. We answer within 30 days. We may need to confirm who you are first.

10. Age

Cleave is for people aged 16 and over. If you are 16 or 17, you confirm in the app that a parent or guardian has agreed to you using it. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child under 16 has given us information, write to hello@cleaveai.app and we will delete it.

11. Security

Information is encrypted in transit and at rest on our servers. Access is limited to the people and systems that need it, and every table in our database is protected by per-user access rules. Progress photos are held in the app's protected storage on your phone. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects you, we will tell you and the relevant authority as the law requires.

12. Changes to this policy

When we change this policy we will update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
