Why your rank is a statue

Most fitness apps answer the question "am I getting anywhere" with a chart. Charts are accurate, and almost nobody feels anything looking at one.

Cleave answers it with a statue.

What the rank is for

The rank has three jobs.

  • Orientation. At a glance, where you are in the journey.
  • Anticipation. What the next rank looks like, and how close you are.
  • Ownership. The statue stands for you. It is the thing you send to a friend.

It only moves forward

There are ten ranks, from Rookie to Diamond. A rank is not a leaderboard position and not a grade of skill. It is a record of work you have done.

That is why it never goes down. A bad week does not undo the months before it. You did that work, and the statue keeps it.

Why a sculptor

The statue on your Home screen holds a hammer and a chisel. It is carving itself. Nobody else does this for you, and nothing is added. The shape appears as material comes off, one session at a time.

That is also where the name comes from. To cleave is to split with a clean strike.
